Andrew Thomson is the first person you see when you arrive at C.ex Coffs. He is the friendly doorman greeting all visitors to the club, you may have also seen him perform with his wife Trudy in the Stars of the Coffs Coast Dance for Cancer in 2017.
This year Andrew has signed up for his first Standard Distance triathlon event (1.5km swim, 40km cycle, 10km run) in March, for the BCU Coffs Tri.
His first involvement with the BCU Coffs Tri was as a Volunteer with the C.ex Community Crew in 2014. Whilst helping out on the water station he was inspired by the competitors and joined the local Coffs Tri club where he is getting some great race practice in. “My goal is to finish under 3 hours” he said “and to not stop running at the end – that’s the hardest part!”
Andrew is certainly an inspiration and one of the many C.ex employees taking part in the local community events in March.
The BCU Coffs Tri is on the weekend of 3-4 March with events for all ages and abilities. Saturday’s events include fun races for children aged six and over as well as the Enticer for ages 13 and over. Sunday’s race is the Standard (Olympic) distance Triathlon open to individuals and teams. All events are held around the Jetty Foreshores and entries are available through villagesports.com.au.
The Mid North Coast Cancer Institute at Coffs Harbour Health Campus has a new piece of medical equipment thanks to C.ex Coffs and it’s Sports Touring and Classic Car Club.
A vein viewer valued at $6850 has been presented to the Cancer Unit, which cares for patients from throughout the Coffs Coast.
The donation was made possible when the car enthusiasts sought the help of C.ex Coffs to partner in funding the equipment. The Car Club’s Event Coordinator Bill Denham said “We’ve had a few members in recent years who have been cared for by the amazing staff at the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute, so when we decided to do something special with our funds, there was no doubt we wanted to help support the staff who do such wonderful work with local cancer patients.”
C.ex Coffs were delighted to partner with the Car Club to provide this valuable piece of equipment to help make a very real and tangible difference to the community.
This Christmas, the foyer of each of our clubs paid home to a ‘Giving Tree’. Over 80 gifts were collected from members and staff, which were passed on to Uniting Foster Care, Warrina Women’s Refuge and Dads in Distress for distribution to local families in need. Thank you to North Coast Christmas Trees for kindly supplying the stunning trees in support of our initiative and to those who contributed, helping make Christmas special for everyone on the Coffs Coast.
Soon to open, Pete’s Place is Coffs Harbour’s newest community initiative, providing drop in shower and laundry facilities to those facing homelessness.
Today, the C.ex Community Crew called in to meet the facility manager, Dave and gifted some towels ready for when the centre opens.
Pete’s Place is located at the Coffs Harbour Neighbourhood Centre and will operate five days per week with plans to open early 2018. The project was made possible through funding provided by Coffs Harbour City Council and was initiated by St. Vincent de Paul, Rotary Club Of Coffs Harbour South, CHESS Employment & Support Services, Coffs Harbour Neighbourhood Centre and New Horizons Coffs Harbour.
C.ex Group is delighted to have partnered with McDonald’s and Coffs City Rotary to deliver the 2017 C.ex McDonald’s Cycle Challenge. The event was a huge success, with 567 riders enjoying a beautiful sunny winter’s day along with a warm community atmosphere on August 6.
Over 400 participants rode in the four main events; 20km, 40km, 60km and 100km and the 10km Family Ride attracted 56 families. Elite riders, riders with disabilities, dynamic young riders along with eager grandparents all rode at their own pace.
The C.ex Community Crew assisted Rotary with registrations on the Saturday and were part of the action on Sunday, with C.ex Group Mascot, Chocolate Moose officially starting the family ride.
The C.ex McDonald’s Cycle Challenge is a great community event, fostering the Coffs community spirit and a healthy lifestyle, whilst donating all proceeds to local and Rotary charities. We look forward to being part of the event for many years to come.
The fourth C.ex Community Crew Sleep Out was held on Wednesday 28 June 2017 at the C.ex Coffs International Stadium. The annual fundraising event is held during June each year and encourages all community members to register and sleep out for the night, enduring what 105,000 homeless Australians experience on any given night.
The event saw 110 participants from as far as Sydney fundraise in the lead up to the night, before braving the winter cold and 3am rain, sleeping on the stadium field in cardboard boxes.
More information on the C.ex Community Crew Sleep Out, including fundraising totals can be found here.
